William Herschel was born January 9,1833 in Slough, England. He was a British officer in India who used fingerprints for identification on contracts. He died on october 24, 1917.He was the first European to note the value of fingerprints for identification. The fingerprints were unique and permanent. In 1858 Herschel started using whole handprints as a signature on contracts.
